GUARDIANS OF BIG GOVERNMENT
Guardians of big government

In a recent column in the Sun, John Hitzel wrote about 24 “unsolicited” charter change suggestions from citizens, to be “discussed and debated.” I hope the readers weren’t led to believe that these items were discussed and debated in detail. He goes on to say that debate was streamlined, another way of saying this list of citizen suggestions was almost completely blown off.
This goes to show the disdain a large majority of these folks have for the general population and shows the plan, already in place, to keep the status quo. This is probably why few people show up for any county business, knowing they won’t be taken seriously.
Here are a few comments I heard at the March 16 Charter Review Committee meeting.
According to Paula Hess, since they heard from so few citizens, everybody must be happy with the current form of government which has “worked for over 40 years.”
Why do you think they heard from so few people?
Don McCormick,“We are passing review on what people thought was a better way of doing things … maybe 40 years ago.”
What about now? Did the people 40 years ago have to deal with the tax and spend politicians now in office that do whatever they please?
McCormick, “We are here to review the Charter and we are empowered to make those judgments without it being a referendum on democracy.”
Not surprisingly, election of the Charter Review Commission was totally dismissed.
