The following story and pictures were sent in by a brave watchdog.

Charlotte County Utilities posted an article on the County website stating the heavy rains the other day that caused bubbling sewer manholes are not a health risk as the wastewater was discharged into swales and-or diluted by the heavy rains and ‘ was NOT discharged into local waterways.’

WELL, On Elkcam Blvd in Parkside along Sunrise Waterway (at McGuire Park and Sewer Lift Station #11 along Sunrise Waterway) those sewer manholes were bubbling like heck into the rainwater in the flooded swales. Concern with this particular situation is that only a few feet away from this bubbling sewer manhole that was discharging wastewater into the swale is that a storm drain grate inlet takes in rainwater and discharges it DIRECTLY into SUNRISE waterway behind McGuire Park near Gertrude Ave Bridge.

Other swales may absorb the contents of the bubbling sewer manhole discharges as the Utility Dept article states BUT Elkcam Blvd’s situation is different because the bubbling sewer manholes discharging wastewater (fecal contaminated rainwaters) that have overtaken those sewer pipes is being sucked down in (see photo) a whirlpool affect directly into the storm drain that is just several feet away from this bubbling sewer manhole.) These photos of bubbling sewer manhole in swale on Elkcam and whirlpool draining down into storm drain in front of Sewer Lift Station# 11 at McGuire Park IS discharging this contaminated water directly into Sunrise Waterway and surely can NOT be healthy for this waterway, the downstream health of Charlotte Harbor etc.
